Abstract

We formulated and evaluated nanoceria coated with multifunctional terpolymers bearing DNase I on their surface. The system was designed as an approach to tackle post-ischemic oxidative stress and combat resistance to thrombolytic therapy. Stability evaluation and development of lyophilization technique showed the more stable conformation in the suspension form. The catalytic activities of nanoceria indicated a concentration-dependent activity in the ex vivo model. This antioxidant capacity being mostly preserved following the coating and functionalization of CNPs. There are many potential interests to be investigated in the future related to the activity of grafted DNase I and the antioxidant properties of the nanoceria. For instance, it is essential to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the toxicity of functionalized nanoceria and their activity assessment in stroke models to ensure their successful use in clinical applications. The present study therefore enables us to discover the versatility of biofunctionalized cerium oxide nanoparticles as a therapeutic agent with multiple purposes in treating ischemic stroke.
