All over the world, as in Greece, the consumption of antimicrobials is a "threat" for humanity. The consumption of antimicrobial drugs has the effect of increasing the resistance of microorganisms towards antibiotics. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the incidence of Urinary Tract Infections in the Emergency Department (ED) of the General University Hospital of Patras (GUHP) as well as to investigate the antimicrobial resistance. Methodology: A retrospective observational study was conducted. All patients coming successively in the period from March 20, 2015 until March 19, 2016 in the ED, either with UTI symptoms or laboratory documented positive urinalysis and culture were investigated. All data regarding these patients were collected from the Medilab-i program of GUHP and were entered in a new database. Statistical analyzes were performed with SPSS v.19.0. Results: The total number of examined patients in the ED during the whole study period, were 17,404, of these 6,568 (37.7%) patients were laboratory tested for UTI. Laboratory documented urinary tract infections were diagnosed in 1,919 (29%) patients and in 1,285 (67%) out of them urine culture was performed. A total of 534 (42%) had positive and 569 (44%) negative cultures and 182 (14%) were repeated tests. Mainly Escherichia coli (65.2%) was detected, followed by Klebsiella pneumonia (11.9%) and Proteus mirabilis (6.52%). The highest resistance rates for Escherichia coli were observed in Ampicillin (64.68%) and Amoxicillin / clavulanic acid (43.38%), whereas low rates were observed in Amikacin (0.34%), Imipenem (0.54%) and Netelmicin (1.94%). Klebsiella pneumonia shows a high resistance to ampicillin (92.9%), Tobramycin (82.4%), Cefaclor (79.3%) and Amoxicillin / clavulanic acid (67.8%). Conclusions: Escherichia coli is by far the most common cause of urinary tract infections in patients presenting to the ED of GUHP. The development of antimicrobial resistance is a warning and reveals a major problem of public health.el
