| dc.description.translatedabstract | This study investigates the relationship between Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and economic growth (GDP growth) across 19 Latin American countries over the period 2000–2017, using panel data and quantitative econometric methods. The main objective is to assess the impact of FDI on economic expansion, considering institutional quality and the nature of investments (e.g., strategic, market-seeking, efficiency-seeking, and resource-seeking). Data analysis was conducted using Python, utilizing libraries such as pandas, statsmodels, and linearmodels. The findings from both the statistical and econometric analysis suggest that the correlation between FDI and economic growth is weak and not consistently statistically significant. In the initial OLS regression, the FDI coefficient was positive but lacked strong statisticalsupport. The extended models, which incorporated institutional quality indicators (ICRG) and FDI motives, did not significantly enhance the explanatory power of the estimations. In the panel data models (Fixed Effects, Random Effects, PanelOLS), the results were mixed. A modestly positive FDI effect was detected in specific approaches, yet the models exhibited low R2 and considerable cross-country heterogeneity. The comparison between predicted and actual GDP growth, along with residual analysis, revealed limited predictive accuracy, reinforcing the view that the impact of FDI is contingent upon additional unobserved factors. These may include structural differences, political context, and timing effects that cannot be easily captured through linear econometric frameworks. In conclusion, the study contributes to the ongoing debate on the role of FDI in developing economies, particularly in Latin America, by highlighting the complexity of the relationship and the need for multifactorial approaches. Future research should consider dynamic models, non-linear interactions, and country-specific institutional and economic characteristics for a more comprehensive understanding of how FDI influences growth. | |
