The present thesis focuses on investigating the impact of telecommunication-type distortions on emotion perception, structuring its analysis around the complex interaction between speaker identity, distortion type, and the category of the expressed emotion. Annotated audio clips from the AESDD database were utilized and subjected to digital alterations similar to those encountered in VoIP systems, such as frequency limiting of the signal using LPF (4 kHz, 2 kHz), choppy speech, and clipping. An original experimental procedure was developed in a PsychoPy environment, involving 143 participants. Participants were asked to identify the emotion perceived from each audio stimulus while simultaneously evaluating the subjective difficulty of the process, which was equated to the level of uncertainty inherent in their response. The statistical analysis results highlighted speaker identity as a central regulator of the listeners' perceptual ability, with specific speakers exhibiting a significant discrepancy between objective performance and subjective certainty. Anger emerged as the most resilient emotion, even under conditions of extreme distortion, in contrast to Disgust, which showed the highest sensitivity and the lowest overall performance among the speakers included in the study. Additionally, it was found that the introduction of choppy speech in combination with clipping leads to a drastic reduction in the correct recognition of Sadness and Fear, primarily due to the alteration of subtle spectral elements through which they can be detected. The findings underscore the need for the implementation of speaker-centered audio signal processing models. Furthermore, through these findings, proposals are formulated for future research to enhance the deeper understanding of perceptual processes related to emotion via machine learning and neuroimaging methods, as well as the development of personalized hearing aids, thereby contributing social value.
