Abstract

This diploma thesis focuses on the study, design, and implementation of an electronic, multilevel, modular, non regulated DC-DC boost converter intended for the parallel interconnection of photovoltaic (PV) systems. The project was carried out at the Laboratory of Electromechanical Energy Conversion of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Polytechnic School of the University of Patras. An innovative interconnection architecture for PV systems is explored, in which a non-regulated, boost converter is connected to each PV module, which then connect in parallel on the high-voltage side. System’s control is managed by a central inverter positioned downstream of the parallel connection. In contrast to conventional architectures, this configuration enables maximum power extraction from each PV module, even under partial shading conditions. However, for this approach to be viable in practical applications, the boost converter must satisfy specific criteria-namely, low cost and compactness. Through comprehensive analysis and simulation of several DC-DC converter topologies, a multilevel converter is selected as the most suitable candidate, based on its alignment with the design requirements. Central inverter’s control is then simulated, including the implementation of a Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithm within the central inverter. Subsequently, the design and fabrication process of the selected converter topology is detailed, including the methodology behind components selection. Finally, experimental procedures are presented, following by conclusions, and recommendations for near future improvements.
