This thesis examines the problem of classifying sound signals originating from ships, with the aim of identifying four types of vessels (Cargo Ship, Tanker, Passenger Ship, Tug), as well as the category of underwater background noise (Noise). The study is carried out using an underwater acoustic dataset called DeepShip, which consists of 47 hours and 4 minutes of actual underwater recordings of 265 different ships belonging to the four categories mentioned above, with different seasonal conditions and noise levels. The proposed algorithm is based on underwater signals, from which time-frequency energy properties are extracted to create a comprehensive set of features. Initially, the acoustic data is processed and analyzed using STFT and spectrogram generation, followed by the calculation of numerous descriptive functions in the time and frequency domains, such as mean values, variances, higher-order moments, and transformed energy indices. The feature set is used to train and evaluate machine learning algorithms, with a particular emphasis on the Gradient Boosting Classifier, while also performing hyperparameter tuning optimization for the classifier through Grid Search and Stochastic Search, as well as analyzing the effect of noise and its classification on overall performance. The analysis includes data normalization, class imbalance management, energy graph creation and dimensionality reduction for the visual evaluation of classified samples and the study of feature importance through Mean Decrease Impurity (MDI), highlighting the most prevalent features. Finally, the results of the algorithm, which are compared based on classification accuracy, precision, recall, f1-score and analyzed using confusion matrices and UMAPs, show that the proposed network achieves 81% classification accuracy, with clear distinction of ship types and specifically improved performance after targeted management of noisy segments, resulting in a reliable and scalable classification system suitable for maritime surveillance and acoustic signal analysis applications.
