Olive (Olea europaea L.) is an economically important crop in the Messenia region of Greece, where the Koroneiki cultivar predominates. In irrigated olive orchards of the area, continuous soil moisture availability favours the development of competitive weed vegetation, making chemical weed control a widely used management practice. The aim of this undergraduate thesis was to study and compare the efficacy of two herbicide mixtures, sharing flazasulfuron (Matsuda WG) as a common component, combined in one treatment with glyphosate (Galore 36SL) and in the other with mesotrione (MAISOTRIONE 100 SC), in an irrigated Koroneiki olive orchard in Messenia. The experiment comprised two treatment strips, without replication or randomisation, alongside an unsprayed control. Application was carried out on 3 June 2025 using a backpack sprayer, and vegetation development was monitored during three consecutive field visits, at 20, 40 and 60 days after spraying (DAS), through photographic documentation and descriptive assessment. Both treatments showed equally strong initial activity at 20 DAS, with near-complete desiccation of grass weeds. From 40 DAS onward, however, a clear divergence emerged: the Flazasulfuron+ Glyphosate treatment maintained full weed control up to 60 DAS, whereas the Flazasulfuron+ Mesotrione treatment showed progressive, spatially uneven reemergence of broadleaf weeds, mainly horseweed (Conyza sp.), concentrated near the tree trunks. This difference is attributed to the distinct mechanisms of action and to the limited soil persistence of mesotrione under the high summer temperatures, combined with the biology of Conyza sp. Owing to the absence of replication and randomisation, the results are descriptive rather than statistically validated.
