| el |
| dc.description.translatedabstract | High modulus polymeric fibers combine high thermal and chemical stability, with high tensile strength and low density. These fibers are of great importance during the last two decades due to their wide application in composite materials, fabrics and gas separation membranes. The most important class of polymeric fibers is aromatic polyamides or aramids, such as Kevlar which can be produced by spinning a liquid crystal solution. In the present work, efforts were made in coating aromatic polyamides (fibers and fabrics) with aromatic polyether solutions in order to create new materials with improved strength. More specifically, it was studied the doping ability or spray coating of aramid fibers (Kevlar or Nomex) with different aromatic polyether solutions. In specific, aromatic polyethers containing pyridine groups in the main chain were used for this study. It was also studied the polymer weight gain (wt %) as a function of time and concentration of the polymeric solution and it was examined the presence of specific interactions between the polymer fiber/fabric and the coating for different aromatic polyethers by means of ATR – FT-IR spectroscopy. Furthermore, the thermal stability of the coated Kevlar fiber/fabric was investigated with thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Due to the insolubility of aromatic polyamides, and in order to study better the specific interactions of polyamides with aromatic polyethers, aliphatic polyamides (Nylon 11)/aromatic polyethers blends were prepared in various compositions. The characterization technique, which was used to study the development of specific interactions, was ATR – FT-IR spectroscopy. In addition, the thermal stability was examined with thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), the morphological study was performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while the miscibility behavior was investigated using dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). | el |
