Abstract
This thesis presents CleanStreams, a mobile application designed to support communities in detecting trash in river ecosystems. The increasing presence of waste in rivers and the nearby areas creates significant environmental challenges that might put the whole area at risk.
To tackle the problem once and for all, proper education along with monitoring solutions are needed. Traditional manual inspections are often time-consuming, limited in coverage and dependent on outdoor conditions to be successful.
The use of modern equipment such as drones, along with a pretrained algorithm that detects trash in rivers can both support in addressing this issue. Aerial imaging captured by the drone can be used to identify potential waste objects along river surfaces, eliminating the time needed for manual inspection.
Through this work, the team designed a mobile application that can be integrated with a compact drone, capable of flying over rivers to detect waste. Along with the design of the application, a user study was conducted to evaluate its usability and effectiveness. The participants’ feedback indicated that the proposed system provides a practical solution that can support environmental monitoring efforts.
