Non-invasive brain stimulation methods are a general category that refers to the application of neurostimulation to living organisms, without the use of surgery or anesthesia, in specific centers of the brain. In recent years, bibliographic references have reported the use of non-invasive brain stimulation by physical therapists, especially in neurorehabilitation. Both the role of the physical therapist in psychiatric rehabilitation and the use of these methods represent a pioneering development in science, which broadens the possibilities of mental health treatment. Purpose: As part of their undergraduate studies, the authors of this paper explore the clinical use of various methods of non-invasive brain stimulation in the rehabilitation of psychiatric disorders. Methodology: For the purpose of the study, guidelines, clinical trials, and systematic reviews/meta-analyses were sought concerning the application of non-invasive stimulation methods to a wide range of mental disorders and their effectiveness. The search was conducted in the Pubmed, Google Scholar, PsycInfo, and Physiopedia databases, using the keywords "NIBS," "RNS," "tACS," "tDCS," "TMS," and "TUS." The main search population was psychiatric patients, and the keywords used for this search were: "mental disorder, psychiatric disorder, major depression (MDD), mood disorder, eating disorder, schizophrenia, autism, stress disorder, PTSD, ADHD, bipolar disorder, alcohol disorder." Results: A total of 1,252 articles were collected and screened based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Therefore, 61 studies remained for presentation, of which 31 concerned the TMS method, 18 concerned tDCS, 5 concerned tACS, 4 concerned tRNS, and 6 concerned TUS. Conclusions: rTMS and tDCS are the most frequently investigated and used NIBS methods in the psychiatric population, with the other methods being in the early stages of research. These methods have positive effects on the clinical picture of psychiatric disorders. tACS and TUS have positive findings, especially in the treatment of schizophrenia, while tRNS is an emerging therapeutic method, offering therapeutic benefits through sound waves. The majority of the included studies emphasize the need for studies investigating the effectiveness of various NIBS methods. In particular, greater protocol homogeneity in clinical studies is highlighted in order to achieve meta-analyses of these findings to validate the effectiveness of the methods.
