| dc.description.translatedabstract | This study aims to explore how Schiller and Schelling apply the Kantian sublime –particularly the dynamically sublime– to their theory of tragedy along the following lines: Firstly, it examines six of Schiller’s essays (1792 – 1801), which, unlike Kant, strongly defend art’s capacity to manifest the sublime. Herewith it discusses a shift in Schiller’s thought (1801), according to which the power of Reason is regarded as a subterfuge against nature’s might and tragedy as man’s optimal “tool” towards the confrontation of the adversities of life in general through reflection. Secondly, taking the Tenth Letter from the Philosophical Letters on Dogmatism and Criticism (1795) and Schelling’s lectures on The Philosophy of Art (1802 – 1804) as a starting point, it explains how and why freedom can best be presented in the tragic work of art through the indifference between freedom and necessity. Thirdly, questioning both views’ adequacy in interpreting the nature of the tragic phenomenon, it proposes a more “holistic” research approach, whereby the tragic is put forward as a defining principle of the Schellingian understanding of human existence. In this context, later works such as the Philosophical Investigations into the Essence of Human Freedom (1809) and The Ages of the World (1811 – 1815), posit necessity at the core of every single human being as a condition for the realization of freedom. This seems to bridge the idea of the necessity of fate and evil in Greek tragedy with the principle of darkness later, as a prerequisite for its antithetical principle of the will of love, and vice versa. In other words, the Schellingian notion of the “melancholy of life”, oscillating between the will to exist and the nostalgia for its lost unity, highlights the ground of existence as a necessary condition for the preservation of life, while validating the possibility of evil and placing freedom in a constant state of becoming; hence, always unstable. However, such a view should not be considered pessimistic, given that the dynamic conflict between the two opposing principles is a constitutive element of life itself. | |
