The rapid progress in synthetic image generation in recent years has raised significant concerns and is responsible for various complications in society. Distinguishing between authentic and manipulated audio-visual material is now a challenge, even for the most experienced users. The authenticity of the content shared on social media platforms, which contributes to informing the public, cannot be easily validated. Users with malicious intentions, by distributing this content, can cause harm ranging from personal-level damage to significant diplomatic incidents. The implementation of systems capable of effectively distinguishing the authentic from the manipulated media seems imperative. The aim of the thesis is to examine whether the models used for this purpose are indeed reliable against emerging threats. Initially, reference is made to the background knowledge needed for better understanding of this work. Subsequently, concepts like Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and especially Deep Learning with emphasis on Neural Networks are introduced and various detection methods found in literature are examined. From the set of threats available, this work is dealing with deepfakes, a deep learning manipulation technique based on autoencoders and Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). Following that, a thorough examination of the main datasets and deepfake recognition models in literature is discussed. Research continues with conduction of experiments using the Xception model, a traditional convolutional neural network and the Celeb-DF, a dataset including over 5.500 high quality deepfakes. The data processing, the neural network training and the analysis of the results lead to conclusions, which are presented in the final chapter of this thesis.
