| dc.description.translatedabstract | This master’s thesis, conducted within the Master’s Program “Theoretical and Practical Philosophy” of the Department of Philosophy at University of Patras, critically examines the phenomenon of human enhancement through the lens of Kantian moral philosophy, with the aim of investigating the normative, anthropological, and ontological presuppositions of the transhumanist project. The first part undertakes a systematic conceptual and ideological mapping of human enhancement. The notion is analyzed across three distinct semantic levels: (a) the enhancement of particular human capacities, (b) self-improvement, and (c) the transformation of human nature itself. At the same time, the study distinguishes and analyzes the principal theoretical paradigms structuring contemporary enhancement discourse: transhumanism, technical posthumanism, and critical posthumanism. It is argued that transhumanism, despite its explicit appeal to the values of Enlightenment humanism, transforms human enhancement from a technical possibility into a normative imperative, advancing a teleological project aimed at overcoming the biological human condition. By contrast, critical posthumanism does not advocate a program of technological transcendence, but rather seeks to deconstruct the anthropocentric dualisms and normative hierarchies of modern metaphysics. The second part presents the fundamental principles of Kantian moral philosophy, primarily as articulated in the Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals. Particular emphasis is placed on the concepts of the autonomy of the will, the categorical imperative, and dignity as the absolute value of every rational being. These concepts are employed not as an external moral framework mechanically imposed upon transhumanist thought, but as an internal philosophical criterion through which its normative claims are critically evaluated. The third part systematically reconstructs several major transhumanist arguments in favor of human enhancement. More specifically, it examines the positions of Ingmar Persson and Julian Savulescu concerning the alleged duty of moral bio-enhancement, Nick Bostrom’s argument regarding the moral obligation to combat aging and death, as well as the approaches of John Harris and Allen Buchanan, who conceive enhancement as a therapeutic transcendence of an inherently deficient human nature. The fourth part, constituting the theoretical core of the thesis, develops a systematic Kantian critique of these positions. First, it is argued that the transformation of enhancement into a “moral duty” ultimately rests upon hypothetical imperatives and empirical ends and therefore remains fundamentally heteronomous. Second, the thesis contends that the prospect of a complete biotechnological modification of the will leads to the annulment of human autonomy and its replacement by what is described as “perfect programming,” namely, an artificial form of causality incompatible with the possibility of acting morally “from duty.” Third, it is argued that the genetic and biotechnological enhancement of future persons entails the danger of instrumentalizing the human being, thereby violating the Kantian principle according to which every person must always be treated simultaneously as an end in itself and never merely as a means. In the concluding section, the thesis critically investigates whether transhumanism constitutes a continuation of, or a rupture with, modern humanism. It concludes that the relationship between the two is not organic but parasitic: transhumanism appropriates the normative concepts of autonomy, progress, and emancipation from the humanist tradition only to ultimately transform them into a technocratic project of perpetual optimization. Within this framework, autonomy is redefined as technical mastery over nature, dignity as functional efficiency, and education as a process of technological reconstruction of the human being. Consequently, despite its liberal and humanistic rhetoric, transhumanism ultimately emerges as a fundamentally non-humanistic ideological and political program. | |
