| dc.description.translatedabstract | INTRODUCTION: Narrative discourse in preschool-aged children plays a significant role in broader language development. Consequently, its assessment is considered important within the context of diagnosing speech and communication disorders. PURPOSE: The present research is a case study aimed at assessing and implementing an intervention regarding narrative discourse in preschool-aged children. METHODOLOGY: A total of 16 typically developing children, aged 4.0–5.0 years, participated in the study. Based on the results of a comprehensive assessment, the two children with the lowest scores were selected. The following assessment tests were administered: DEL, Pael, Non- word Repetition, Auditory Discrimination (picture-selection task), DVIQ (morphosyntax comprehension), DVIQ (morphosyntax production), Action Pictures, METAFON, and the Bus Story Test. RESULTS: The child who received the intervention achieved higher scores on the assessment tool used (Bus Story). Specifically, information scores rose from 4 to 13 (change: +9), MLU increased from 4.6 to 5.2 (change: +0.6), and the number of subordinate clauses rose from 1 to 4 (change: +3). In contrast, children in the control group showed no progress, remaining stable across parameters or even recording lower scores compared to the initial assessment. The mean performance scores of both groups on the various administered measures did not differ in a statistically significant way, with the exception of the non-word repetition task and the Expressive Vocabulary Test, on which the intervention group scored higher. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the results of the present study, the following were observed: a strong interaction between narrative and lexical ability; engagement with narrative activities enhances lexical development regarding both receptive and expressive vocabulary; and a link exists between narrative skill and morphosyntactic reinforcement. | |
