This study investigates the impact of three different salinities (18 ppt, 23 ppt, and 28 ppt) on the growth performance, food consumption, and digestibility in gildhead sea bream (Sparus aurata) within a self-sustaining closed aquaponic system. Three integrated closed aquaponic systems were used, and were divided into three treatments based on salinity levels. A total of 180 gildhead sea bream individuals, with an averang weight 4.09 ± 0.08 g and length 6.86 ± 0.04 cm, were utilized for the experiment, for 30 days. The fish were provided with a commercial diet containing 5% protein of b.w/day. The results indicated that salinity had a significant influence on feed consumption and digestibility, with the most pronounced effects observed in the 18 ppt treatment compared to the 23 ppt and 28 ppt treatments. Additionally, water quality exhibited variations in relation to salinity, while the presence of Salicornia europea played a role in nutrient management, thereby enhancing the ecological sustainability of the system. This research offers valuable insights for optimizing gild head seabream farming conditions and underscores aquaponics as a viable sustainable method. Future studies could further explore the effects of different plant species on water quality and their interactions with fish.
