The objective of this thesis is the analysis, presentation and evaluation of the existing situation of landslide phenomena which occur in two sites: Platanitis area near Nafpaktos village in Aitoloakarnania Prefecture and Karia village in Achaia Prefecture. The site of Platanitis is interesting because of the new road failure which has been observed in the site from the winter-period 2005-2006 until 2013. In order to deal with the failure, a new by-pass downstream of the existing road was manufactured in 2014. This is therefore a recent event. On the contrary, Karia village is interesting, because it is characterized by a historical background of landslides, with the most important events occurring in 1961, 1999, and 2001. A great and common attribute of both research sites is the movements on the Flysch formation. Flysch constitutes the most usual formation of landslide onset in Greece. For these reasons, the conduction of a geotechnical study was considered necessary, which included monitoring of landslides in time that was carried out using instrumental and remote sensing methods. During the elaboration of the study, time was the “key-element” (past-present-future). The thesis was held in the Laboratory of Engineering Geology, Department of Geology, University of Patras and it is part of a research project with the acronym LAVMO (Landslide Vulnerability Model) - Landslide Vulnerability Model Development through the use of Remote Sensing methods and SAR interferometry in the context of the program THALIS (NSRF 2007-2013). The whole research was based on two new sampling – inclinometer boreholes that were drilled in each position. The study was completed through different stages regarding in situ work, laboratory work and office work. Firstly, the engineering geological mapping of the sites was carried out, in order the new elements to be analyzed and compared with maps that already existed from previous studies. The inclinometer measurements, which were received at a monthly time-step, are also characterized as in situ work. At the same time, the necessary laboratory tests of the samples received by the two boreholes were carried out in the laboratory. After the completion of the tests, the geotechnical cross - sections (logs) were written. In the last phase of the study, two engineering geological maps were produced – one for Karia and one for Plataniti - using Geographical Information Systems (GIS), as well as two engineering geological cross - sections (one for each site) with the positions of the boreholes using AUTOCAD 2010 software. One of the cross - sections was used for the Limit Equilibrium Slope Stability Analysis, using SLIDE 5.0software. The Limit Equilibrium Slope Stability Analysis was conducted only for the site of Karia, because of the fact that there are not noteworthy movements in Platanitis site. Furthermore, inclinometer diagrams were designed, which gave information about the slip surface depth and the magnitude of slip surface displacement in relation to time. In the end, there was conducted research of historical presumptions in Patras Press Museum - only for the site of Karia, in order to specify by precise date and witnesses’ descriptions the landslide events that stroke the area from the 1960s to date.el
